Pros and Cons of Using the Same SSID for 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi
If you've ever connected to home Wi-Fi and seen two network names (SSIDs) like "MyWifi-G" and "MyWifi-A", you've already encountered the two bands: 2.4GHz and 5GHz. More and more modern routers merge these into a single SSID using a feature called band steering. 2.4GHz vs. 5GHz: What's the Difference?

When you combine both bands under a single SSID using band steering, your phone or computer automatically connects to whichever frequency gives it the best signal at any given moment.
For example, you might get the fast 5GHz band in the same room as the router, and then seamlessly switch to the more penetrating 2.4GHz band when you move to a farther room. No need to manually dig into Wi-Fi settings — it all happens automatically.
Disadvantages and Pitfalls of Band Steering
Convenient as it sounds, band steering can backfire depending on your home setup.
- Drops caused by indecisive band switching
- When your phone decides it can still hold onto 5GHz — even with a weak signal — it won't switch to 2.4GHz. The result is dramatically slower speeds or "zombie Wi-Fi": full bars on the signal icon, but no actual internet.
- Smart home devices failing to set up
- Most smart home devices — robot vacuums, smart speakers, and so on — only support 2.4GHz. If your phone is connected to 5GHz during the initial setup, the companion app often can't find the device, and setup fails.
